St Patrick's Day: The feast of St Patrick was celebrated in great style. Both churches in the parish were suitably decorated for the celebration. As part of our celebrations shamrock was blessed, the choirs sang beautiful Irish hymns and chants. We remembered and prayed for those who could not be home for the occasion, many who have had to emigrate seeking employment abroad.

‘Do this in Memory of Me’ The next Mass in preparation for First Holy Communion will be celebrated in Athlacca Church next Sunday 23rd of March at 10.00a.m.

St Joseph’s Foundation: Plans are at an advance stage for the annual Spring Fair in aid of St Joseph’s Foundation which will take place on Sunday, 13th of April. The next meeting to discuss this event will take place on Tuesday next, 18th March at 8.30p.m. in St Joseph’s workshop, Baker’s Road.  Your help with this event would be greatly appreciated. We would be delighted if you could attend the meeting.

Lent: As an aid to help us understand Lent and its significance in our lives, a desert scene has been created at the entrance of Athlacca Church. Lent is a season when we make a special effort to renew our faith and our relationship with God. During these days of Lent we go into the desert, so that we can remove all of the inner “clutter” from our lives. This desert scene which will change each week as we move towards Holy Week will stand as a visual reminder to all who enter the church, that God is calling us to turn away from our sin and follow the way of the Gospel. Thanks to Karen and her family for creating this liturgical scene for us.

Altar Society: It is hoped to set up an Altar Society in Athlacca Church. The role of an Altar Society is to assist and help the sacristan in preparing the church and altar for all liturgical celebrations, including Sunday Mass and the various liturgical seasons throughout the year. If you are interested in getting involved contact Karen Fox, Parish Clerk in Athlacca Church.

Trocaire: This year’s Trocaire campaign is well under way. Trocaire boxes are still available in both Churches. Last year the parish of Dromin Athlacca contributed €2,403.00. Please assist in this year’s campaign by having a Trocaire Box in your home.

Congratulations to all the boys and girls may they have a great 2014.  Also we should congratulate the parents who take them to training, to matches, look after their gear, support them through hail, rain and sometimes snow.  No doubt our children are our future and will get loads of praise, but the parents who sacrifice hours of shuttling them to and fro are to be commended on their bit to our champions.

Dromin Church
The maintenance work in the interior of Dromin Church is now complete. This work included repair to the internal walls surrounding all the windows where damage from water was evident. This work was carried in July 2013 by Constructive Solutions, Clonmel. In recent weeks the entire interior of the building has been painted and a new carpet has been laid on the sanctuary area. The painting of the church was carried out by United Colours Decorators, Limerick. The carpet was supplied by D.J. Hayes & Co Kilfinane . The cost of phase one of the work was € 39,729.00. Phase two of the work will be on the exterior of the building including repairs to the parapet/coping stones on each of the gable ends, some minor repair works to the roof, replacement of existing gutters and down pipes and the redecoration of the external walls. It is hoped to begin phase two of the project by June of this year. As phase two of the work begins it will be necessary to raise funds in addition to the weekly offertory collection. Parishioners who are in a position to contribute a little more to the weekly offertory collection are encouraged to do so. If you would like to make a once off donation towards phase two of the work it would be most welcome.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.
Across the world people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.  Whether quietly with their family, at a Church service, or boisterously in a pub, millions will join in marking the anniversary of Ireland’s patron saint. St. Patrick’s Day is without question the biggest celebration of a national day across the globe.  In the big American cities, in Moscow’s Red Square, in Montserrat (the only place besides Ireland to declare the 17th of March a full public holiday) and even in Nigeria, people bedecked in green will be proclaiming themselves Irish for the day.  Because of its global nature, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been celebrated with more fanfare abroad than in Ireland.
Limerick’s Parade Route: Starting at Punches Cross the parade entrants will march down O'Connell Street, finishing at the Island Road. 70,000 spectators throng the streets of Limerick every year for the St Patrick’s Day parade and the 2014 festival promises to be the best yet!
Limerick is Ireland's largest St. Patrick's Day Parade outside of Dublin. There are numerous floats, community groups and bands providing a riot of colour, noise and entertainment for Limerick's largest audience.
Bruff Parade starting at the Primary School at 2p.m. The theme of this year''s parade is "Bruff''s Day of Culture". A Duck Race has been organised between the two Bridges at the end of the town with many prizes .
Kilmallock Parade: After 12 noon Mass starting at the Church and going up town.

Rathkeale Parade This year’s theme I Love My Town. The parade is on Monday 17th starting at 12.30 at Hennessy's corner. Entrants to meet outside Tadgh O'Connor''s DIY Store from 11.30-12.15. Road closed at 12.15.

Charleville’s Parade: Starting with Community Mass at 12 noon in the Church. Then continuing on to Holy Cross Graveyard.

Is it Shamrock or is it Clover?

Although similar, clover when in flower has either purple or white flowers, the shamrock has tiny yellow flowers.  The difference between Shamrock and Clover is Shamrock is smaller, easier to get out of the ground, doesn’t have the thick root system of the clover and the leaves don’t have the white lines though it that clover has.  Clover also has tiny little hairs on the back of the leaves, Shamrock doesn’t.

Memory Lane
During the week I got a lovely photo from Mary Ring in California.  Mary was telling me that it would have been their dads birthday last weekend.  Many of you will remember Patrick Joseph Ring better known as Dodo… He was a lovely man and a great worker. Dodo worked for Kilmallock Co. Council for many years and always had the roads leading to Athlacca clean and tidy, the drains at the sides of the roads were always kept clear and the water tables on other roads were always to be seen.  Dodo was a great singer and always sang while he worked.  He had only one mode of transport and that was his trusty bike.  If you didn’t see Dodo, you knew he would be around if you saw his bike.  He is often spoken of fondly in the parish yet.
