Church News:
Dromin Athlacca Parish Harvest Celebration Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Thanksgiving Mass on Sunday.  We would especially like to thanks the Altar society for their beautiful arrangements of flowers and vegetables, also to our Choir for their participation. Every orginisation in the parish presented an item to celebrate its success and continuation.   The theme for the Mass was thanksgiving. It's the time of year when people all over the world celebrate the harvest and this year we have a lot to be thankful for, we celebrate the fruits of our work, we celebrate our harvests, our achievements, our successes at work, in exams, on the sports field. We celebrate the gift of family and community. We give thanks for the abundance of God's blessing that we have received. We would like to thank you all for joining us for this special celebration. Refreshments were available in the community hall after Mass and indeed everyone enjoyed meeting up with old and new friends.

Recent Bereavements:  Our sincere sympathy to Ann Roche Clogher on the death of her brother Murt Downes Knockaderry.  Murt was well known for his country and traditional music.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

Diocesan Synod: As we pray for the international Synod in Rome, Bishop Leahy has confirmed that Limerick too is on the synodal journey. We are preparing for the first Synod in Limerick since 1937! The Diocese of Limerick will from December begin an 18 month period of reflection and listening as it builds towards the first Synod held in Ireland since the 1950s and the first in the diocese in over 70 years.

The Synod will be a three day-meeting of 400 delegates in Spring 2016 that will set out a path to enable the Diocese to meet the many challenges it faces going forward and ensure it can deliver, with a sense of renewal as well as partnership among all in the diocese, the message, ministry and mission needed for the future.

Between now and the official Synod launch on Sunday, December 7th the Diocese will be identifying the 400 Synod delegates, which will be drawn from across the Dioceses, and will collectively embark with the delegates on a process that will set out the key issues for consideration at the gathering in Spring 2016. If you are interested in becoming a delegate to the Synod contact Fr Mullins during the week. Parish representatives have to selected by the 22nd of October.

World Faiths and Religions:  St. Saviour’s Dominican Church, Glentworth Street, Limerick presents a short course directed by Sr. Jo O’Donovan: Christians and World Faiths. Following on her earlier course on Judaism, this course will reflect on the main tenets of Muslim faith; its Five Pillars or ways of service and worship and on some aspects of Islam’s great secret – its spirituality. The course will also explore aspects of the Eastern religions, particularly Buddhism, to which Christians have begun to relate in our times. Course commences on October 7th, 7.30 – 9.00 PM and will continue on Tuesdays until 18th November. Jo O’Donovan RSM was on the staff of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, from 1966–2002.  In 2013 she published: Understanding Differently: Christianity and the World Religions. Entrance to St. Saviour’s church hall is on Dominic’s Street, around the corner from Glentworth St and the Tait Clock. Donation invited: 5 euro per session.

In the coming year and a half there will be many gatherings for discussion, catechesis and prayer" If you are interested in becoming a delegate to represent Dromin Athlacca Parish at the synod, you are asked to contact Rosemarie Murphy, Dromin, Chairperson Pastoral Council, Triona Neenan, Athlacca, Secretary Pastoral Council or Fr Mullins

Match Results: The Dromin/Athlacca junior bs took to the field for the last time on Sunday the 12th in Caherconlish against Monaleen in the county semi final, but what they didn't know was this would be the last game they played. Matched reffed by Pat Coffee of Cappamore. Game started at 12:05 and Kieran Shortt playing midfield got stuck straight in making sure Monaleen wouldn't get the start they needed.
The ball was hit over the side line and Kevin McManus was first in it to the the first point of the game. This was quickly followed by a point by Monaleen levelling the game. Darren Moynihan takes the puck out for Dromin/Athlacca but won by Monaleen and they go for a shot at foal but its stopped in the line by Darren and cleared by Gary Costello, won again by Monaleen who take the lead with their second point of the game.. The men in blue and white need to start winning the high ball if they want to get onto of Monaleen.
Darren takes his puckout once again and its contested in the air by both teams but Monaleen collect the lose ball and its a point in their favour.
Quickly Darren takes another puck out and its hit out to Killian Liston who gives a high ball to Richard Ryan who points it giving Monaleen a one point lead.

Monaleen take their puckout but its read perfectly by Kieran Short who wins a free from it. Richard Ryan standing over the ball taking his time eyeing up the posts. Takes a deep breath and points the ball. The scores are now level.
Both teams working hard to be on top of the game but so far the teams are equally matched.. After half an hour of both teams trying to get one better on each other the half time score is Dromin Athlacca 6 points to Monaleen 5 points.

The second half started with the Dromin Athlacca side showing to be stronger with mike Meade playing well getting the better if his maker. Substitution for Dromin Athlacca and its Michael Walsh gone in for Joe power.
A lot of sides in this half by both teams. Monaleen seem to be getting lucky with their scores. John McManus playing a stormer clearing anything that comes in his path.
Mike Meade also playing great getting a point after running rings around his marker

Somehow Monaleen seem to be getting everything.
Second substitution for Dromin Athlacca and its Eamon o dea gone for Brendan Walsh. This poor Dromin Athlacca side just can't get a break today with the calls that have been made, but the fight is still there. Monaleen just getting on top that much more take the lead by 4 points. Not much left in this game. John McManus again clearing the threat making Monaleen work harder to get the ball into their possession but with a clash of Hurley's they somehow get it and its goal Monaleen. Time is not on the Dromin Athlacca side today and the ref blows up for full time.
This Dromin Athlacca side have played their hearts out but just fell short today. They have worn those jerseys with pride and I'm positive this won't be the last you hear of these men.

Full time score was Dromin Athlacca 7 points to Monaleen 1-10

FIXTURES: Intermediate Premier. Friday the 15th of August. Dromin/Athlacca Vs Croom in Kilbreedy at 8pm
RESULTS: Junior B. Dromin/Athlacca 3-9 Camogue Rovers 1-8.
Friday the 8th Dromin/Athlacca travelled to Bruff to take on Camogue rovers.
There is always a rivalry between these two clubs, so this game was sure to be an exciting one.
The ref was Donal Browne. Once the ball was thrown in straight away both teams knew this wasn’t going to be a relaxed game. Donal Walsh got the first point of the game after a tough battle, but this was quietened quickly by the Camogue side with a point to keep the teams level.
Both teams trying to settle the nerves for this important game and it was the blue and white side to settle first with points by Killian Liston, Richard Ryan and Joe power. The Dromin/Athlacca side taking the lead after 15 minutes. This was going to be a tight game. No sooner had the Dromin/Athlacca side settled into the game, Camogue Rovers took the lead by putting the ball into the back of the net.
The half time score was Dromin/Athlacca 4 points, Camogue Rovers 1-6.
Straight away in the second half Mike Mead steels 2 points for the Dromin/Athlacca Side. This time it proved to be the team in blue and white that were taking control of the game with a goal by Donal Walsh. Camogue Rovers were struggling to keep up with this young side as Joe Power ran rings around his marker. The Camogue side weren’t giving up just yet as they kept keeping their points to stay in the game but it was Donal Walsh again to dampen their spirits with another goal.
Peter McMahon and Kevin McManus dominating at midfield winning every puck out that was given to them. This young pair would pose a threat for any team they are to come up against. The game was truly put to an end with Donal Walsh pulling off a hat-trick. Kieran Shortt just adding that last sting to the score with a point.
The Game ended Dromin/Athlacca 3-9, Camogue Rovers 1-8

These crafts go back generations with the likes of Jack Burns making headstones and fancy stonework over 20 years ago to Eileen Douhig making some of the finest patch work quilts in this time period. These are trades in themselves and have been passed down from generation to generation only to become lost in this century. This week we are acknowledging people who are working in Timber and Stone.

Results: Junior B. Dromin/Athlacca 17 Points, Knockainey 8 Points.
Saturday evening the Junior B’s travelled to Hospital to play Knockainey. Knowing this would be a physical game after the encounter we had against them in the League.
The Game started with a point by Knockainey. So this was going to be no easy game.  The Dromin/Athlacca men settling into the game showed Richard Ryan scoring free, after free, after free.
The Knockainey men were struggling to get around the Dromin/Athlacca defence and pressure from James Kelly and Kieran Shortt were really putting Knockainey off their game. Knockainey winning the ball again making the Dromin/Athlacca defence work and Garry Costello robs the ball and pulls off a stylish flick of the ball over his marker and clearing the ball into the forwards.
The half time whistle blew with a score of, Dromin/Athlacca 8 points, Knockainey 6 points.
The second half started with Kevin McManus winning a free for the Dromin/Athlacca side, with Richard Ryan easily putting the ball over the bar. The first Substitution was Gavin Neenan gone for Michael Walsh. Followed shortly by Trevor Sherin gone in for Gary Costello, and Peter Lynch gone in for Peter McMahon. These fresh legs were sure to make a difference in the game. Joe Power pulled of a skilful rob of the ball with an off load to Gavin Neenan who slotted the ball over the bar.
Knockainey getting a point saw the end to this game.
A great victory for the Dromin/Athlacca Junior B’s.

Fixtures
Intermediate Premier. Challenge game against Ballyduff in Athlacca on Sunday at 7pm.

Scrap Metal Collection: Dromin/Athlacca are having a Scrap Metal Collection again. For more information contact Mike Geaney 0876494841

Good News on the NCT: Recently while on my way to town I heard on the news that they were changing the NCT set up and like everyone else I thought now what is this going to cost, I like several people thought that they were going to be putting up the price further.  But indeed I was wrong.  The following piece was got from the Irish Independent Newspaper.

Motorists will now be able to get their car tested any time before their normal NCT date under new measures to be announced today. Up to this they could test 90 days prior to the due date. But from today, they can pick their own time in advance. The new arrangements could give respite to owners of cars approaching the 10-year-old mark. If they test their cars more than 90 days before the due NCT date they will get a two-year certificate. If they don't, they will get one year as cars over 10 years old have to be tested annually.
For the first time too, owners will get the mileage of their car – and up to three previous recordings – printed on their NCT certificate. This is part of an attempt to thwart the practice of 'clocking' where mileage is turned back by unscrupulous sellers to enhance the value of the car. Owners will have to verify that the mileage shown at the time of their test is correct.
And those from the motor trade who book a test at short notice will now have to show their driving licence or a Trade Management System fob at the NCT centre. The NCT say this is designed to bring greater transparency to transactions.
The greater flexibility on testing times should also help anyone wishing to buy or sell a car because the vehicle's road worthiness will be right up to date.
Road Safety Authority chief executive Moyagh Murdock said printing mileage on the certificate will help to "combat fraudulent activity by unscrupulous sellers and make things easier for those in the second-hand car trade".
It is expected that the voluntary early testing will help change the pattern of NCT inspections throughout the year by reducing demand at busier times.
Around 50pc of the vehicle fleet is due an NCT in the first three months of the year – because most new cars have traditionally been bought in that period – and that puts pressure on the service.
Of the cars tested in the first six months of this year, 369,724 (49pc) passed with 381,822 failing; a further 2,646 were found to be dangerously defective.
Cancelling a test will cost €22 (€11.50 for a re-test) unless owners give at least five clear working days notice. The charge will be levied when the car is eventually tested.
The test costs €55. A re-test costs €28 if NCT equipment has to be used. It is free if it only requires a visual inspection.
Owners can check their test due date on the NCTS website (www.ncts.ie) by entering their car's registration.
Birds of a feather and all that….
Last week we had a little bit about Swallows, this week we are going to have a bit about the decline in some of our native Amphibian (Toads, Frogs and Newt’s). I am sure many of you have noticed that there is an increase in the fly population well this is down to the decline in our Amphibian population. Amphibian are some of our greatest friends and yet we seem to detest the very sight of them..

There are three species of amphibian found in Ireland – the Natterjack Toad (Bufo calamita), the Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris) and the Common Frog (Rana temporaria). The Natterjack toad is extremely rare, and is confined to a few areas in Counties Kerry and Wexford. The smooth Newt is fairly widespread in Ireland, although it may be very local in distribution in the north-west and south-west. The Common Frog (Rana temporaria) is the only species of frog found in Ireland and is listed as an internationally important species. Frogs are protected under the European Union Habitats Directive and by the Irish Wildlife Act.
According to the Biodiversity Group - Nearly one-third of the world's more than 6,800 species of amphibians are threatened with extinction or are already extinct.  Habitat loss is the most obvious reason for population declines; if forests are cut down and wetlands are filled in, the species depending on those forests and wetlands vanish also.
However, amphibians have been experiencing catastrophic population crashes around the world, often in remote, protected areas and within a single year.  The speed and magnitude of these catastrophic declines are much more dramatic than those described for birds, mammals, or reptiles.
The causes of these declines are numerous and complicated, and in any case might include habitat alteration, disease, climate change, pollution, collection by humans, or even a thinned ozone layer in our atmosphere. Sometimes the cause is obvious—over 95% deforestation of tropical dry forests where we work in western Ecuador being the glaringly clear reason for amphibian disappearance.
What can you do to Help Frogs ?  Make a garden pond to encourage frogs to breed. Frogs spend most of their lives on land so give them long grass, leaf and log piles, trees and shrubs in your garden to feed and hibernate under. Pass on your knowledge of frogs to others. Do not keep endangered frog species as pets and never release a pet frog into the wild. Organise a clean up of rubbish from local ponds and streams.
Surprisingly enough frogs are a gardeners helper, Frogs feed on slugs, insects, worms, spiders and similar prey, but do not predate aquatic organisms. In winter frogs hide in frost-free refuges, under tree stumps, in stacks of turf, or in rock piles where they enter torpor until the following spring.
Frog Profile: Food: Slugs, worms, flies and other insects. The frog’s long sticky tongue is attached to the front part of the mouth, so that it can flick out to catch food.
Habitat: Damp vegetation, camouflaged ponds, hedgerows.
Reproduction: Breed around February and spawn around March, Tadpoles hatch and grow from April to May, Tadpoles metamorphose into froglets, and leave the pond in June/July.
